CTS 1 establishes the foundational knowledge required for aspiring AV professionals. It is the first course in a two-course series designed to prepare learners with the essential knowledge, skills, and abilities essential to the CTS® exam.
Who Should Take This Course
Professionals who:
- Plan to take the CTS Exam in the near future
- Work as AV technicians or in an adjacent position
- Coordinate and collaborate with AV professionals and wish to deepen their knowledge of AV systems, technology, and the industry itself

After taking this course, you will be able to:
- Explain the scope and significance of the AV industry and describe the role of standards within it.
- Explain the fundamental scientific principles that underpin the AV industry, including sound, light, and electricity.
- Identify the components of audio and video systems for various AV setups.
- Describe the role of networking in AV systems.
- Describe the purpose and components of control systems in AV technology.
- Identify the different roles within the AV industry, fundamentals or AV project management, and effective communication skills.
It is highly recommended that upon completion of this course you proceed to the next course in the series: CTS 2. Completion of this course in no way guarantees you will pass the CTS exam, nor will this program cover all the topics listed in the exam content outline. By registering for this course, you are not signing up for the CTS exam. The CTS exam must be applied for, paid for, and then scheduled separately at a Pearson Vue testing center. Candidates should review the CTS candidate handbook to learn more about the CTS Exam. Remember, there is no requirement to take any classes or buy study materials to take the CTS exam. However, many of your peers have found courses like these helpful in their exam preparations.

Rod Brown is a seasoned expert in the audiovisual industry, renowned for his expertise and passion for education. Before retiring as AVIXA's Regional Director for Oceania, Rod taught courses at InfoComm University, led seminars at industry events, and pioneered AV education webinars. He was instrumental in creating and updating educational content to keep it relevant and impactful.
Prior to his role at InfoComm, Rod founded a successful audiovisual consultancy in Melbourne, Australia, where he served a diverse clientele across corporate, educational, entertainment, and other sectors both locally and internationally. His custom solutions for each client demonstrated his versatility and industry insight.
Rod’s profound expertise is grounded in extensive experience in broadcast television, live theatre, concerts, and cinema. This rich background provides him with both technical prowess and creative insight, making him a highly valued mentor in the AV industry. Today, as a volunteer instructor, Rod continues to inspire the next generation of AV professionals.
