Installation Professional

Installation technicians work for Systems Integration Companies (a.k.a Systems Integrators, or Installers) to install permanent AV systems. They execute the plans laid out in AV design documents and bring the physical elements of an AV design to life - they install equipment like displays, loudspeakers, control panels, microphones, lighting, cables, etc. - and combine them into a working system. Systems integrators are responsible for AV system installation, setup, testing or “commissioning”.

Installation professionals use their hands, tools and equipment. They work on job sites, and often on teams. They interface with other AV professionals, AV Designers, and allied trades such as architects, carpenters, electricians and clients. Installation professionals are often required to problem solve and make adjustments on the fly to adapt to changes and circumstances. Installation professionals often work towards CTS-I (Certified Technology Specialist - Installation) certification, which is a standard of excellence recognized around the world.

AV is usually on the network, meaning devices are connected to the internet, also called the internet of things or IoT. Systems Integrators program everything so it works together. The programming task may also be part of an Installation Professional’s job. Oftentimes integrators offer services to maintain equipment and systems for customers.

Systems Integrators often specialize in vertical categories of customers. Retail spaces, airports, courtrooms, hotels, restaurants, schools, stadiums, media art installations, museums, houses of worship, corporate offices, music venues and theaters, or people’s homes are some of the places an installation professional might work.
