Auracast’s three basic system components make this possible:

  • The Transmitter: Any device plugged into an audio source, such as a soundboard, TV, or microphone system, which turns the sound into a broadcast that can be picked up.

  • The Assistant: Devices such as phones, tablets, and other devices that are used to see what broadcasts are available nearby, kind of like scrolling a list of radio stations.

  • The Receiver: Whatever's actually in the listener's ears — earbuds, headphones, or hearing aids that support Auracast and let the wearer tune into the chosen broadcast.

What Is an Auracast Transmitter?

The transmitter is the workhorse of the three, taking the audio that comes in and turning it into a reliable broadcast that devices within its range can find and join. The transmitters typically fall into one of these three categories:

  • Built-In Venue Systems: Permanent equipment installed in theaters, stadiums, or other large venues, usually connected directly to the venue's sound system. 

  • Plug-In Adapters: Small, simple devices that plug into an existing TV, computer, or speaker system to add Auracast broadcasting without having to replace any existing equipment. 

  • Everyday Consumer Devices: Newer phones, laptops, and smart TVs that already have Auracast built in, enabling users to share what they're watching or hearing with someone nearby without any extra equipment.

Benefits of Auracast

Auracast resolves many of the drawbacks of traditional Bluetooth wireless technology that have made public audio distribution frustrating for venues and users alike for years, offering capabilities such as:

  • One Broadcast for Everyone: Because it's an open broadcast rather than a one-to-one connection, there's no limit on how many users can tune in at once, whether it's a handful or a packed stadium. 

  • Better Sound Quality: It uses newer audio technology that transmits clearer, and has less delay than legacy systems venues have relied on for years (e.g., hearing loop systems) whichcan sound muffled or static-y. 

  • Support for Personal Devices: People can connect with earbuds, headphones, or hearing aids they already use, so venues no longer have to provide, collect, and clean shared headsets for patrons who need assistance. 

  • Easy Set up and Use: Pairing menus and button-holdings aren’t required. Users can simply open an app, see a list of nearby broadcasts, and tap to join, much like joining a Wi-Fi network.

  • Multiple Streams at Once: A single setup can offer more than the main audio, letting one system do the work of several separate pieces of equipment.

Auracast provides room-wide audio coverage without dead spots while carrying channels like the main program, translated language, and assistive listening, all tied into the venue's existing mixer or sound system. Through its purpose-built transmitters, installers can monitor and control coverage remotely, with many units plugging right into the audio networks installers already use (such as Dante). A single transmitter typically can cover over 100 meters, though larger venues often link several together.

Real-World Use Cases

Introduced in 2022, Auracast already has some seriously impressive installations behind it at the following well-known venues: 

  1. Sydney Opera House (Sydney, Australia): The Sydney Opera House became the first major cultural venue in the world to permanently install Auracast, adding it to the Drama Theatre, Playhouse, and Studio. It works alongside the venue's existing hearing loop system rather than replacing it — visitors can either pick up a receiver at the cloakroom or connect using their own Auracast-compatible earbuds or hearing aids. One attendee, who wears hearing aids, said it was the “the crispest and clearest” live music experience she'd had in years. 

  2. Frankfurt Airport (Frankfurt, Germany): Frankfurt Airport became the first airport in the world to test Auracast for gate announcements, piloting it at two gates in Terminal 1. Passengers with compatible hearing aids, earbuds, or smartphones can receive boarding announcements and delay updates directly, instead of relying on overhead speakers that can be hard to hear in a noisy terminal.

  3. The Marriott Theatre (Lincolnshire, Illinois): The Marriott Theatre, which has offered a hearing loop for over a decade, became one of the first performing arts venues in the U.S. to add Auracast to make it easier for hearing-impaired patrons to enjoy the show. Instead of checking out a shared headset, theatergoers with compatible devices can connect right from their seats. Early attendees said it made the show feel noticeably clearer.

  4. St Paul's Cathedral (London, UK): To mark Global Accessibility Awareness Day in 2025, Samsung teamed up with hearing aid maker GN and acoustics company Ampetronic to test Auracast inside St Paul's Cathedral, known for its echo-heavy acoustics. Visitors wearing compatible earbuds or hearing aids followed a guided tour and choral performance with sound streamed directly to their ears, cutting through the echo that usually makes it hard to hear announcements in the space.

  5. David Geffen Hall at Lincoln Center (New York, NY): Lincoln Center has recently been testing Auracast at David Geffen Hall in the New York Philharmonic to create a more inclusive listening experience for patrons, notable because the venue’s concerts are performed without amplification. During a test run, a listener seated far from the stage noted that the Auracast system let them clearly make out where each section of the orchestra was positioned, similar to sitting much closer.

Where Is Auracast Available?

Because Auracast is built on Bluetooth LE Audio, it requires compatible hardware and firmware rather than working with older Bluetooth audio devices. While this means that many existing Bluetooth headphones and earbuds won't support Auracast through a software update alone, the Bluetooth LE Audio ecosystem is expanding rapidly. Recent versions of Android and Windows can already discover and join Auracast broadcasts, while major headphone manufacturers, smartphone makers, and hearing aid companies continue rolling out compatible products. As consumers replace their older devices over the next few years, Auracast support is expected to become more mainstream, making public audio broadcasts far more accessible in places like airports, museums, theaters, lecture halls, and fitness centers.
