Cloud-based production is giving broadcast AV teams new ways to scale resources, collaborate remotely, automate workflows, and deliver content in real time. This Broadcast AV Power Hour explored how organizations can balance the flexibility of the cloud with the bandwidth, reliability, security, and operational planning required for live production.
Moderated by David Maldow of Let’s Do Video, the session featured insights from Caitlin Shurilla of Stream Virtual Productions, Drew Martin of Riedel Communications, and Matt Morgan of EVS.
They highlighted several important points:
Build workflows for remote operation. A properly designed studio can allow distributed production teams to control systems and collaborate through cloud infrastructure while reducing travel, staffing, and onsite complexity.
Automate deployment and scaling. Infrastructure-as-code, media functions, and standardized APIs can help teams rapidly configure production resources, scale capacity, and simplify user interfaces.
Use cloud access to accelerate content creation. Media asset management platforms can provide remote editors with proxy access to growing files, enabling clips and recaps to be created while the live production continues.
Plan bandwidth before the show. Teams should calculate the requirements of every production component, test connections, maintain sufficient headroom, and use lower-resolution proxies where appropriate.
Design for failure, not just performance. Backup communications, redundant production instances, alternate internet connections, power protection, and clear contingency paths help keep live productions running when systems or connections fail.
