Welcome back to AV Truth, the "weekly" series where we talk about what really matters in AV… even if the weeks sometimes take a little longer than expected. undefined

(But hey, good AV takes time, and so do good truths)

Let’s jump in.

Bad content workflows can double the carbon footprint of a project, even when the hardware is "green"

And trust me, the hardware is always the hero, but the content? Usually the afterthought.

And that’s exactly where sustainability quietly collapses.

What really happens on site:

  • A 1.2mm LED wall running full brightness 24/7 because no one added an automation schedule.

  • A media server overheating because it’s rendering 12K files for simple background loops.

  • Playlists with unnecessary motion, higher processing load, more heat, more HVAC.

  • The classic moment:
"The content looks off… must be the screen. Let’s replace it"
    And boom, unnecessary e-waste.

Here’s the AV Truth:

Sustainability starts before the LED even turns on.

So let’s add a new chapter to AV best practices:
" The Sustainable Content Lifecycle "

What it should look like:

  1. Smart file optimization (right resolution, right bit-rate).

  2. Automated brightness + power schedules.

  3. Motion-optimized content to reduce processing load.

  4. Local rendering where possible.

  5. Regular content audits.

  6. Content agencies educated on AV realities.

  7. Reduce hardware replacement caused by content mistakes.

Because sometimes the most sustainable thing we can do is simply exporting the file correctly. undefined

Where do you see the biggest hidden sustainability impact? hardware, content, or operations?
And should sustainability KPIs cover the content workflow too?
