Providing more certainty in an increasingly uncertain world: AV design for flexi

Today’s AV projects exist in a Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, and Ambiguous (VUCA) environment.
Things are changing so fast, none of us know what user needs are ‘around the corner’.

It would take a very brave manager to define today precisely what their users will need tomorrow. So how can they tell the AV manager who wants to scope the project? How do we approach uncertainty? The classic approach was design and build to match the ‘must haves’ – no more, no less. A Minimum Viable Project.

Any new needs would be handled as a ‘top up’ project. Increasingly however, changes in user need cause ‘rip and replace’ rather than ‘extend’ of this sort of installation. Attempting to predict the future and including design elements to address those future needs can be fruitful but and ‘every possibility’ approach may lead to features that are never used.

Those features are however points of potential failure. A better approach for today’s VUCA world is to design in the flexibility to change.
Using a control plane that that does not tie the users to a particular brand’s roadmap is a strong foundation, open-standards add the capacity for cross-brand interoperability.
Together this approach delivers viable options for change should they be needed.
