CTSAt InfoComm 2017, 188 people became certified – earning their CTS®, CTS-D, or CTS-I. AV pros seeking their CTS will have their chance to add their name to the CTS Wall at this year’s show and join more than 11,500 AV professionals.

In addition to taking the exam with so many peers, the show also hosts 3-day prep courses to get better acquainted with the test format and material in a collaborative environment. Led by industry expert instructors, students learn test-taking strategies and what to expect on exam day.

Justin Watts, CTS, CTS Prep instructor and IT Operations Manager for MAREK, shares why diving into CTS at the show is worthwhile.

What are the benefits for taking CTS Prep and the exam at the show?

I find that a majority of the folks that I engage with who take the prep course at the show also take the test at the show. Being able to go from the classroom to the test is a huge advantage for some learners. Taking the exam at the show affords you the ability to sit down with the data fresh in your mind away from the external noise that might impact you from doing so anywhere else.

Why do you volunteer to teach the 3-day prep course?

I volunteer to teach the 3-day prep course as a way to give back. I believe in AVIXA's goals of providing a track for the standardized application of the craft that we all use daily to shape the technical ecosystem, and this is one way that we can quantify what we do regularly in our industry. I've taught the CTS Prep course twice now and have also taught the Essentials of AV Technologies course in past years. There's a general camaraderie among the learners as they're all onsite for a common goal and can learn a lot from each other and not just the text itself. Hearing everyone else's experiences from the field in relation to what we discuss in the class is really beneficial.

Testing is available June 4-8 at the Westgate Las Vegas Resort & Casino, right next to the Las Vegas Convention Center.

CTS and CTS-D prep courses run from Sat., June 2, through Mon., June 4, from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. each day. The Setup and Verification course is recommended for those preparing to take their CTS-I exam, which also takes place June 2-4.
