AVIXA volunteer leadersAs a not-for-profit, AVIXA relies on its volunteers to be successful in our mission to advance the commercial AV industry globally. We’re governed by an elected volunteer board of directors, and have countless volunteer committees, task groups, councils, and more that drive the direction of the association and contribute to the success of AVIXA.  We wouldn’t be able to do what we do without our volunteers and the tremendous amount of generosity in their gifts of time, work and dedication to the organization.

We recognize and appreciate how our volunteer leaders have helped AVIXA grow year-over-year since the organization was founded in the late 1930s.  But, contributing as a volunteer can help you grow too.

Giving Back
I think it’s the idea of giving back that resonates with most volunteers. A lot of the members I work with on AVIXA’s councils and committees recognize that the AV industry has given them so much and they just want to give back to others who might need assistance, whether that’s AVIXA, or a peer in the industry that’s struggling with looming challenges in the workplace.  Baby boomers especially feel this way, though I do see some of the younger gen-Xers and millennials wanting to get involved. I believe that most people are inherently good, and just simply want to help. That’s a great way to look at things, and I don’t know about you but when I go above and beyond my normal work day and everything else in my personal life to help someone accomplish something I do truly feel good about it. Your positive attitude can take you further than you expected in the workplace and in your personal life as well.

Stand Out
Struggling to get noticed? Stagnating in your career? These are common issues. Today’s workplace environment is more competitive than ever and taking a back seat and expecting to get what you want because you think you’re entitled is not the recommended course of action. It’s time to take charge. Volunteering not only helps you get recognized by your peers and colleagues who might be in a council meeting with you, but industry-wide recognition occurs at all levels of volunteering. The more active and engaged you are, the more you’re recognized, and the more it pays off in the end. I can’t promise anything, but you might get enough recognition from your supervisor through your volunteer participation that he or she might give you an opportunity on a special project or even a promotion over someone else.

Be Heard
AVIXA does have some true AV professionals on staff. We have expert trainers and other employees that can go “toe-to-toe” with the best of them in the industry.  However, many of us at AVIXA are not-for-profit professionals and we truly depend on the voices of the AV industry’s greatest in various horizontal and vertical markets to understand the full picture of the industry, its challenges, and how to address them from an organizational standpoint.  If you’re experiencing challenges that AVIXA can play a role in helping address, odds are other member companies at other firms are having the same challenges. Bringing those challenges to us might just be the correct avenue to find a solution that works for you and for the betterment of the entire industry.

Grow Your Business
Participating in our volunteer groups, whether a council, committee or sitting on a position on our board of directors offers you invaluable networking opportunities.  From a business standpoint alone, if you’re not actively engaging your peers, and even your competitors, you’re falling behind in the race.  Many of the volunteers I work with have secured projects or made relationships that simply made them money.  Let’s be honest, we’re all working hard every day to become more financially stable, and hopefully make some connections that will take our businesses to the next level of success.  From a personal standpoint, I’ve been happy to see many of the volunteers I work with stay in close contact with one another, even if one of those individuals leaves the industry all together.  We’re stronger together and these connections really can make a world of difference for you personally and for your business.
